The hallways of Brookwood Elementary School were alive on Friday, January 11 with the sights and sounds of Texas customs and traditions as students and staff donned their best western attire to kick off the start of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) with Rodeo Day at Brookwood.  Rodeo Day is coordinated through an initiative with the HLSR speaker committee to host a collaborative day of learning at selected schools.

Led by HLSR volunteers, students in 1st – 5th grades participated in a variety of learning sessions on topics such as two-step dancing, quilting, calf scramble, covered wagons, western games, history of the bolo tie and campfire stories. The day proved to exemplify the spirit of collaboration in the Brookwood community as Rodeo volunteers joined with Watch D.O.G. dads, student leaders, and PTA parents to host an engaging event.

“Our Bears shined with character throughout this Rodeo Day event,” said Brookwood Elementary principal Kathy Gouger. “CCISD fosters the community and school working together to enrich student learning and experiences, and Brookwood experienced that in the spirit of the Rodeo.”

Since 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been promoting agriculture by providing a family-friendly live entertainment experience that educates the public, supports Texas youth, and showcases Western heritage. The 2019 Rodeo will be held from February 25 - March 17, 2019
